AFFECTED Americans can apply for a payment of $75 thanks to a lawsuit settlement from a background check company.
A total of $877,800 is being handed out after the company was accused of breaking the law on consumer background reports.

Eligible Americans can apply for a new $75 one-time payment from TenantReports.com.
The background check company is used by landlords and property managers to conduct background checks on prospective tenants.
But in a class action lawsuit, TenantReports.com was accused of violating the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA).
Plaintiffs say the company included outdated criminal non-convictions on reports requested by landlords.

Under the FCRA, consumer background checks can only include non-convictions from the last seven years.
Although TenantReports.com has not admitted any wrongdoing, it has agreed to a settlement to resolve the class action lawsuit.
Under the settlement, class members will receive an equal share of a $877,800 payment.
That is likely to result in a payment of around $75 per claimant, although the real amount may be higher or lower.

To be eligible, claimants must have been subject to a background report prepared by TenantReports.com between April 8, 2020 and April 9, 2023.
The report must have included information on at least one criminal non-conviction that predated the report by at least seven years.
In order to receive a payment, class members must submit a claim by December 5.
This can be done via an online claim form.
